South African Taxi Industry
The South African taxi industry is one of the most single and popular mode of transport, responsible for carrying over 55% of the total estimated 49 million country’s population on a daily basis.<? Workers, Teacher and school children are amongst that commute on public transport daily to get from point A to B. They depend on the approximately 150 000 minibuses that constitute to 65% of the public transport system. The taxi industry is said to have created over 200 000 jobs out of the alarming poor and the majority of the countries unemployed. According to Arrive Alive the industry makes a turn of over of more than R16, 5 billion. Sadly thought, Arrive Alive points out of the 55% of the people transporting, 36 lives are lost on a daily basis on our roads. The number of deaths continues to rise especially on holiday seasons while road safety campaigns continue to be formed and spread. Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has reiterated that road users who disobey the rules of the road would face the consequences of their actions. "We want to warn road users that no mercy will be shown to any person who commits any traffic violation. During this Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011- 2020, traffic law enforcement will be intensified without compromise in order to make our roads safe. The carnage on our roads must be stopped," Minister Ndebele said. The public transport commuter and traffic official’s complain about taxi drivers behaviours towards them and their regard to the rule of the road also continue to increase. Over the past years there have been talks of introducing and increasing the number of female public transport drivers in the male dominated taxi industry. We went out to the Soshanguve community and asked them if female drivers in the public transport were to increase will it have an impact in state of the taxi industry. This is what they had to say
